Established private practice in small community (my ex-wife’s hometown), offering primary care optometric services.  Also established, with Ophthalmologist, Robert Dicken, Thief River Falls, MN, surgical services for the first time at the local hospital.  Provided all post-surgical follow-up care.  Provided on-site eye examinations at five area nursing homes.

Sept. 1989 - June 1991

Practicing primary care optometry with Henry Reichert, MD.  Responsible for all optometric services for the clinic, as well as our contact lens and low vision services.  Performed all ocular photography including fluorescein angiography.  Routinely treated eye emergencies, abrasions, and red eyes.  Responsible for all medical office visits while Dr. Reichert was not in the office (all mornings and ten complete days per month).  Performed minor surgeries in the office including foreign body removal, cyst drainage, and punctal dilation/irrigation.  Performed post-op care for cataract and RK surgery from first day post-op.  Laboratory and radiology privileges, including CT and MRI, at Mid-Dakota Clinic.  Practiced to the fullest extent of North Dakota therapeutic license, including oral medications.

Emphasis in primary care optometry.  Responsible for examination, diagnosis, and out-patient treatment of the general veteran and active military population.  Performed peripheral retinal examinations on all patients, gonioscopy, low vision workups, visual fields, and treatment of various ocular conditions.  Assisted in the fitting and follow up of aphakic contact lens patients.

Taught general optics for two years while attending Pacific University College of Optometry.  Program dedicated to teaching and nurturing students, who were residents of countries currently in need of modern eyecare services, that were interested in a career in Optometry.

Computerized Optometric Correspondence System

Developed, in conjunction with another colleague, Dean Riskedahl, O.D., a computer system with over one hundred forms to facilitate optometric correspondence.  Macintosh and IBM-compatible versions.
