CIBA Vision established an entirely new level of performance and affordability
for the daily disposable contact lens category with the launch of Focus®
DAILIES® one-day contact lenses.
Historically, high cost has been the primary barrier to widespread acceptance of
daily disposable lenses. Affordability is the key to satisfying patients who
want the exceptional convenience and comfort of wearing a fresh pair of lenses
every day. There is no question that affordability for patients will help expand
the market for daily disposables and allow them to become a mainstream modality
for full-time wear.

A remarkable, new patented manufacturing process developed by CIBA Vision,
called Lightstream Technology, enables extremely efficient production of Focus
DAILIES, resulting in a very affordable price. Focus DAILIES are roughly 30
percent lower priced than 1-Day AcuVue® and should sell for about $1.00 a day
per patient in the U.S.
Lightstream Technology - Breakthroughs for Precision and Efficiency Focus
DAILIES are the first contact lenses to be produced from nelfilcon A, a highly
biocompatible material that is an integral part of this breakthrough in contact
lens manufacturing technology. The name for this unique process, Lightstream
Technology, comes from the stream of ultraviolet light that cures the nelfilcon
liquid polymer into a lens.
Lightstream Technology uses a mask to form a shadow that prevents polymer beyond
the edge of the lens from gelling. This shadow creates a smooth, clean, and
precise edge that is the key to the excellent comfort of Focus DAILIES.
Computerized camera inspections are performed on each lens to ensure quality
before the lenses are sealed in a patient-friendly blister pack.
The unrivalled precision and efficiency of Lightstream Technology are the
reasons for the comfort and affordability of Focus DAILIES lenses. Dr. Quiring
truly believes that this the next revolution in contact lenses.
Patient and Practitioner Praise for Focus DAILIES
In Norway, where Focus DAILIES launched in 1997, practitioners were particularly
pleased with patient compliance, noting that the dropout rate was estimated at
less than one percent, far better than for other contact lenses. As a result,
fitting patients with these new lenses can increase patient retention, patient
satisfaction, and in turn, practice profitability.
*Among 190 patients involved in the clinical trials in the United Kingdom,
Canada, and Norway, 65 percent of wearers said they preferred the comfort and
handling of Focus DAILIES to that of 1-Day AcuVue® lenses at the time of initial
dispensing. The preference for Focus DAILIES increased after one week of
contra-lateral lens wear, as 73 percent of wearers reported a preference for the
lens.
A survey of more than 100 Norwegian wearers found that 71 percent reported five
or more days of wear per week -- a clear indicator that Focus DAILIES are
affordable for full-time wear. Ninety-five percent of respondents said that they
would very likely continue to use the Focus DAILIES lenses, and 96 percent said
they would recommend Focus DAILIES to their friends and families.
This lens is approved for daily wear and single use only (replacement after a
single wearing). It is packaged in boxes with 30 and 90 lenses in individual
blister packs.
