Meet Dr. Quiring

Dr. Quiring began practicing next to The Optical Shoppe, Inc. in Cortez,
Colorado in August, 2004. He has been practicing since 1989 with
Ophthalmologists, in private practice and in corporate Optometry. On this page,
he shares information about himself and links to some of his favorite things and
places.

Dr. Quiring grew up in rural,
Nashua,
Montana where there were more horses and
cattle than people! Being the son of a grain farmer, Howard (German and Dutch
heritage) and Eulane (maiden name was Stenbakken - 100% Norwegian heritage)
Quiring, he enjoys the outdoors and the wide open spaces. During the past 12
years he practiced in two offices in
Coon Rapids and
Blaine, suburbs of
Minneapolis, Minnesota. And one of his common sayings he told his patients in
Minneapolis is that while there he felt like "a country mouse in the city!"

He is very excited about finally being back in the West and being closer to his
siblings in Colorado. He has older brothers in
Durango and
Eagle, as well as a
younger sister in Fort Collins. His twin brother lives in
Portland, Oregon. He
always enjoys "coming home" to Montana as his Dad still lives in the family home
in Nashua, Montana. One of his favorite pastimes back home is playing the card
game
cribbage in the "sun room" with Dad.
One of his favorite movies is "Dances With Wolves." It exhibits the
respect for our Native Americans as they deserve.

The Quiring boys (and Dad) have made a family tradition of spending a week or so
on Lake Powell in
Utah for a "boys" boating week in September. He has explored
some of the
Four Corners Area with his brothers from Durango and Eagle in the
past ten years. Winter trips for included many trips to the
Vail,
Colorado for
skiing and
snowmobiling with his brother from Eagle. He has visited Arizona a
lot in the winter; golfing and visiting his
Mom and Dad who were "snow birds" for many
years, in Apache Junction,
Arizona.

In his spare time, Dr. Quiring enjoys spending time with his
children,
fishing,
camping,
golfing and working
on his computer.

Dr. Quiring believes in allowing his patients as much time as they need during
their exam. Nothing is rushed; especially when arriving to his patient's final
prescription. In fact, Dr. Quiring's patients will recognize the optical trial
frame on the left. He likes to use this instrument as a final check of his
patient's new prescription. He does this to fine tune the new prescription by
adding additional power, or in some cases, even reducing the prescription power
in order to clarify the patient's vision.

Using the optical trial frame allows the patient to see the difference in
clarity between their old pair of eyeglasses and their new prescription...
before they buy new eyeglasses. Sometimes looking at real world things, rather
than letters on an eye chart, makes it easier for patients to make lens choices.
This allows patient to view, with the new prescription, objects that are over
100 feet away (rather than sitting in the examination chair and looking just 15
feet away from the eye chart). Thanks to the city of Cortez, there is a "stop"
sign on Beech street (half a block away) that is visible from his examination
room to use as an object to look at during trial framing his patients!

Dr. Quiring is an American Red Cross volunteer with the Southwest Colorado
Chapter in Durango, Colorado and volunteered in the aftermath of
Hurricane Katrina.
