What is a Doctor of Optometry?
"Doctors of optometry (Optometrists) are independent primary health care
providers who examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the
visual system, the eyes and associated structures as well as diagnose related
structures."

Doctors of Optometry (Optometrists) examine the internal and external structure
of the eyes to diagnose eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal
disorders; systemic diseases like hypertension and diabetes; and vision
conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.
Optometrists also do testing to determine the patient's ability to focus and
coordinate the eyes, and to judge depth and see colors accurately.
Optometrists prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses and medicines to treat eye
diseases.
As primary eye care providers, optometrists are an integral part of the health
care team and an entry point into the health care system. They are skilled in
the co-management of care that affects the eye health and vision of their
patients and an excellent source of referral to other health care professionals.
Doctors of Optometry are independent primary health care providers who
specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases
and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures (including
related systemic conditions).
Doctors of Optometry are specifically educated, clinically trained and state
licensed to examine the eyes for the presence or absence of vision problems, eye
diseases or ocular manifestations of systemic diseases such as diabetes and
hypertension.
The Importance of Annual Eye Exams
Frequent eye exams are indispensable to your eye health. Since the eye is a
sensitive organ, it undergoes many changes over a lifetime - changes that may be
imperceptible to you, but which can lead to difficulties if left undetected.
Only your eyecare professional has the specialized knowledge and precision
instrumentation available to evaluate the general health of your eyes, as well
as the effectiveness of your contact lenses.

Seeing 20/20 isn't the only reason to have an eye exam. During the course of an
annual exam, your eyecare professional may not only tell you about the health of
your eyes, but also about your health in general. Your eyecare professional may
detect the early onset of certain diseases such as glaucoma and cataracts, as
well as diabetes, high blood pressure and multiple sclerosis - just by examining
your eyes.
In addition to your annual eye exam, your eyecare professional will tell you how
often you need to have your eyes checked. Never extend the time until your next
visit.

How We Can Help You With Your
Medical Insurance or Vision Plan?
Many patients now have one or both types of insurance coverage's: Medical and
Vision.
Vision plans cover routine (refractive) care to answer "Am I seeing well?" or
"Has my prescription for glasses changed?"
Medical plans typically cover non-routine care for those with health concerns,
which require eye health evaluations. For example, diabetics, those experiencing
headaches of unknown cause, eye turns, "lazy eye," or complaints such as dry,
red, or scratchy eyes are in need of special (non-routine) evaluations. If you
would like to utilize your medical insurance, please remember it is your
responsibility to follow the insurance company's requirements, such as bringing
your insurance cards and any necessary referral forms.
If you request to be seen without the necessary referral forms, you will be
responsible for payment of our standard fees on the day of service. We will
provide you with a receipt containing all the necessary information for your
submission.
