Dr. Quiring was out of the office November 3 - 22nd, 2004 as he traveled to Thailand. He, with Dr. Amelyn Yong from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, visited orphanages to deliver ocular medications and lubricants (dry eye supplements) to wonderful children. They also delivered clothing and toiletry items that were donated by Dr. Yong.

An excerpt from Alcon's website:
"The Medical Missions Program has for more than 40 years supported thousands of caring physicians in global charitable efforts aimed at preserving and restoring sight to the less fortunate. Through this program Alcon annually contributes products to more than 900 medical missions in more than 85 countries. This support helps restore vision to individuals in developing countries, allowing them to regain their independence and enjoy richer, fuller lives. A frequent comment made by volunteer eyecare doctors is "without Alcon's support we could not continue our humanitarian efforts.""

Thank you very much Alcon for helping to make a difference in the lives of orphans in Thailand. Your generous gift of medications is greatly appreciated! Keep up your great humanitarian work all around the world! ~Russell Quiring, O.D.

Featured Orphanage:
Care Corner Orphanage, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Dr. Quiring visiting the Care Corner Orphanage, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The Care Corner Orphanage is just a few miles north of Chiang Mai, Thailand. It currently cares for almost 90 children (from 1 year to 19 years of age) that have lost their parents. The children sleep in bunk beds in separate, boys and girls buildings. They have clean clothes and adequate food, thanks to donations from caring people and organizations. To read some "Real Life Stories" of some of the children at the orphanage, visit their website.

The orphanage has a meeting hall where meetings are held every night, filled with songs and God's word. They also have chickens that produce their eggs, a mushroom farm and vegetable garden. They also raise their own fish in a pond on the property.

There is also a home on the property for the children with AIDS... called the AIDS house. These children have an attendant living in the house with them to care for their needs, but they interact normally with the other children.

All of the children have chores to do around the orphanage and also go a public school that is very close to the orphanage. All public school students wear school uniforms and they must be purchased by the orphanage. There are children in Thailand that cannot afford to go to school as a lot of the school supplies are not provided by the government, but by the child's family.

The children also make their own handicrafts (on the website select the "Gifts & Crafts" menu item) that are sold in Thailand and Singapore to help raise money for the orphanage. Many of these handicrafts are made of homemade paper (that the children make from tree bark). Their handicrafts are beautiful! Use the link in this paragraph to view some samples or you can see a few samples at Dr. Quiring's office, hanging on the wall in his examination room! Click here to go to children pictures. An excerpt from Care Corner Orphanage's website:
"April 1995 was the inception of Care Corner Orphanage. It first started out with twenty-eight children. As of March 1999, there are total of eighty-six children housed at the orphanage, and there are many more on the waiting list. The goal of the ministry is to provide spiritual development based on the Bible, basic education, primary health care and the utmost moral guidance as they grow. The work is expanding fast among the children who came from family devastated by drug addiction or AIDS. The orphanage also provides shelter for girls who would otherwise be lured into prostitution. We are trusting the Lord to provide the needs to accommodate as many as two hundred children in the future."

We would like to thank Rev. Ricky Tan and his wife, Lay Hwa Tan for allowing Dr. Quiring and Dr. Yong to stay at their orphanage while visiting. We had a wonderful time with the children and enjoyed your warm hospitality and food. Thanks so much!

If you are interested in donating to the orphanage or sponsoring a child for just $30/day please contact them using this link and select "Donations" on the left menu.
